DescriptionHorseshoe crab gardening is a great way to bring life to your garden or patio. These little crabs can actually be found in fresh water all around the world, and they do enjoy some fish! They come in a variety of different colors, so you’re sure to find one that will go with the other colors of plants in your garden, or even the rest of your yard. These adorable little crustacean friends are extremely easy to care for, which makes them a great option for a beginner crab gardener.
Life cycleHorseshoe crabs have an average lifespan of about two years. This means that in just two years you’ll have two babies. The exact life cycle depends on the species of crab, their environment, and how well you know how to handle your crabs. Some species live for as long as ten years in captivity. Others can live as long as twenty years. Your best bet is to start out with a few baby crabs so you’ll know what to expect later on.
Breeding/rearingWhen you get these guys as pets, you can’t simply leave them in a big container and let them fend for themselves. You’ll need to do some breeding and rearing if you want to have more than one or two baby crabs. Start by selecting a few friends who are close to your house and have access to food and water. Make sure they’re not stressed by being alone for too long (horseshoes often leave their offspring behind when they walk away from the crab tank). Bring them into the crab enclosure and place them in a half-shell housing, using gravel as a base.
